The fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria: what are the major challenges?
In 2017, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria caused the deaths of 2.5 million people. These infectious diseases remain a major global health challenge. The Global Fund intends to contribute to their eradication by 2030.
Tools exist to prevent and treat diseases: insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets and anti-malarial drugs, antiretrovirals in the case of HIV-AIDS, and treatments for tuberculosis. In addition, it is essential to establish a lasting dialogue on the necessary adaptations to public health policies, including the strengthening of health systems, while maintaining investment in scientific and medical research, to complete the knowledge needed to eliminate these diseases.
Within this framework, Expertise France, through the Initiative - France's indirect contribution to the Global Fund - is developing technical assistance and supporting projects in the most fragile countries and/or those lagging furthest behind in achieving their disease control objectives. This complements the historic mobilization efforts initiated by France, foremost among which is the personal commitment of the President of the Republic.
In view of the goal of eliminating HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030, and in the run-up to the Global Fund's replenishment conference in Lyon in October 2019, what are the challenges ahead?
